My choices for an entry level replacement receiver were between this and the Sony STR-DH720. I picked the Pioneer as I was replacing a 10 year old Pioneer that had just recently started acting up and I was quite happy with. This receiver is plenty loud, but I do have two primary complaints.

I bought this unit (at a local Big Box store) because I felt at $250 it was a tremendous value given its features. Upon hooking it up and running the auto setup it sound pretty good. I thought it sounded great until I compared it to a Denon 1312 that I have since replaced it with (more on this in a bit). Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a great sounding receiver. It is mediocre at best. The real problem was how much video noise it introduced into my Tv’s picture. I have a 42′ Insignia (Best Buy store brand) with a Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc Player and there were sooooo many artifacts in the picture (little black dots) that hadn’t been there before. I had to turn the noise filter on both the player and the tv all the way up and drastically reduce the picture sharpness to make the noise levels livable, not even eliminate it. So I had to tune my picture settings for noise reduction, not picture quality and was contemplating returning it. Then the HDMI input labeled ‘BD’ stopped working properly. It would display a picture but not put out any sound, regardless of what source and cable combo I tried. Combos that worked fine on any other input would give me zero sound. So I returned it and exchanged it for a Denon AVR-1312. While not as feature rich, it doesn’t have a single one of the issues that this receiver had. No more picture quality issues, much better sound, better bass response from my subwoofer, in short every thing is better. It is worth giving up a few features to have a receiver that actually does its job properly.

My first (and biggest) is the fact that it doesn’t seem to support ARC or Standby Passthrough unless you enable ‘Control via HDMI’ which only works with certain pieces of equipment as is only spelled out in the manual. On the website, they simply have a check-mark next to both features, so I didn’t expect either to have caveats. Perhaps I am wrong in thinking that the HDMI signal should pass through the receiver if it is in standby regardless of whether ‘Control via HDMI’ is turned on and regardless of the equipment being Pioneer-compliant, but I feel it was a bit misleading in my mind. Please note that I am no A/V expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt and please research for yourself. In the mean time I am considering leaving the HDMI switching to my display and making use of the dual optical inputs like I did with my old receiver. My other complaint is that the on-screen-display (OSD) is only output through the RCA ports and NOT through HDMI. After purchasing brand new 1.4 HDMI cables and attempting to rid myself of all of the other optical-toslink, etc. cables, I find it a bit retro that you would only allow menu setup to happen through RCA video out. Just my opinions, decide for yourself, but given the info I have now, I believe I would’ve went with the DH720 and hoped for the best. Read more on Reviews Home Theater

Do I just need to stick with one thing. I want to be a lawyer, actor and journalist. This is my plan.

You have a lot of goals, but your best bet is to focus on what is most realistic. First off, if you want to be an attorney you have to actually go to SEVEN years of school after high school, four years of undergrad and three years of law. In college, you’ll want to probably pick one major and maybe a minor, it’s possible to have more than one major but it becomes more difficult and sometimes unreasonable to do. Journalism is a good major, as it can allow you to do almost any type of job. To go to law school, however, it doesn’t matter what your major was in college, just doing well in college.

I want to go to NYU for journalism and acting for my undergrad and then get a dual major from Columbia for journalism and law. After that I want to go to LA and pursue my dream of tv/film acting. I’m a freshman in high school as of now. I have been acting since I was 6 and it’s my passion. I have two agents as of right now. I use to do theater but now I do tv/film acting. I love to write also. I want to work for The New York Times or Variety Magazine. I love to judge TV shows. Can I work from home and like mail my Reviews of the shows to Variety. I need a back up plan and Journalism is it, plus its another passion. I also would like to become a lawyer. I would be a very good lawyer, and love history and law and am very interested in politics. How is Columbia’s law program and what is it rated. Do I have too many unrealistic dreams. I know I can’t do all of them, and I don’t want to waist my parents and my money. I just have many interests. Acting I love, but it is a harsh business I love to write and judge shows so journalism is a good plan I would make a good lawyer plus they make way more money than the other two except if I work for The NY Times or like a hit TV show.
